GH327 Interface Board Reference Manual

GH327 Interface Board Reference Manual

The GH327 Interface Board provides either a stand-alone FM RDS application device, or an interfacing bridge to other devices via either a UART interface, or an XBee ZigBee RF module. The board uses an 8-bit AVR MCU to control all the interfaces, including the FM board. The MCU can be reprogrammed via an ISP header on the board. The GH327 Interface Board also contains a RS232 transceiver converting the UART interface into a PC compatible RS232 port. Lastly, the board should be powered by a 5V source of at least 100mA.

Component Descriptions
MCU: ATMega644
The ATMega644 is a general purpose MCU with a rich set of peripherals built in. The processor is clocked with an external 8MHZ crystal, but a value of up to 10MHZ can be used. The MCU features a built-in Flash and EEPROM memories. The flash is used to store code which can be reprogrammed via the ISP header on the board. The EEPROM memory can be used by the application programmed into the chip, one such application is to provide a unique ID to each board as no unique hardware ID exists on the board.

The ATMega644 is the heart of the board, it interfaces to the FM RDS chip, as well as the UART bus. The MCU makes use of the UART bus by a built in UART peripheral. The UART bus can be used in two ways, either to interface to the XBee ZigBee radio, or to interface to an RS232 port through an RS232 transceiver. The UART peripheral can be programmed via either interrupts, or polling. The interface to the FM RDS chip is realized with the use of an I2C peripheral also built into the ATMega644. The bus is pulled up sufficiently via resistors to allow for the maximum 400Khz communication speed. Like the UART peripheral, the I2C can be programmed using interrupts or polling as well. Please refer to the ATMega644 datasheet for more information on these peripherals, and others.

Power Supply Model XP-720 Instruction Manual

Power Supply Model XP-720 Instruction Manual

The Model XP-720 Power Supply features three solid-state DC power supplies and a 12.6VAC center tapped output. The first two DC supplies consist of one positive and one negative 1.5 to 15 volts at 1 ampere. The third has a fixed 5V at 3 amperes. All DC supplies are fully regulated. A special IC circuit keeps the output voltage within .2V when going from no load to 1 ampere. The output is fully protected from short circuits. The AC section has 6.3VAC @ 1A and a 12.6 center tapped @ 1A. This supply is ideal for use in school labs, service shops or anywhere a precise DC voltage is required.

Transformer
The transformer T1 serves two purposes. First, it reduces the 120VAC input to 17VAC to 8VAC to allow the proper voltage to enter the rectifier stages. Second, it isolates the power supply output from the 120VAC line. This prevents the user from dangerous voltage shock should the user be standing in a grounded area. AC to DC Converter

The AC to DC converter consists of diodes D1 and D3 and capacitor C5. Transformer T1 has two secondary windings which are 180 degrees out of phase. The AC output at each winding is shown in Figure 2A and 2B. Diodes are semiconductor devices that allow current to flow in one direction. The arrow in Figure 3 points to the direction that the current will flow. Only when the transformer voltage is positive will current flow through the diodes. Figure 3 shows the simplest possible rectifier circuit. This circuit is known as a half-wave rectifier. Here the diode conducts only half of the time when the AC wave is positive as shown in Figure 2C. Use of this circuit is simple but inefficient. The big gap between cycles require much more filtering to obtain a smooth DC voltage.

Micro-Trak BFT Manual

Micro-Trak BFT Manual

This manual covers Version 1.0 of the Micro-Trak BFT tracking transmitter. The MT-BFT is a single channel, crystal-controlled APRS transmitter controlled by a standard Tiny-Trak 3 encoder PIC. For more complete information on the TT3 encoder and its associated configuration software, please download the TT3 manual and configuration program from the Byonics website. The MT-BFT is only available on the North American APRS frequency, 144.390 MHZ. The unit is sold fully assembled and tested. The MT-BFT requires as much as 9 Amperes of supply current to operate at full power. Do not exceed an operating voltage of 13.5 Volts.

Programming
Programming the MT-BFT is accomplished in the same manner as programming a Tiny-Trak3. The MT-BFT is connected to the serial port of a computer port running the Byonics TT3 configuration software via a serial cable and Null-modem adaptor. The adaptor is required to switch the serial receive and transmit connectors in respect to that of a GPS receiver, which we anticipate will be the normal operating mode for your transmitter. Like most Micro-Trak and TinyTrak products, the DB-9 connector on the PC board has a 5 volt output for powering a GPS. The DB-9 is plug and play compatible with the Byonics GPS 2 and many other 5 volt powered GPS receivers.

When transmitting, the MT-BFT creates an enormous radio frequency energy filed that can wreak havoc with your computer while you are attempting programming. There are two user adjustable trimmer potentiometers on the printed circuit board. The one marked “PWR” sets the bias for the amplifiers turn-on gate. It should be noted that all of the valuable adjustment of this trimmer is in the last few degrees of rotation, and power levels other than fully rotated are best carried out with an RF power meter while transmitting into a dummy load. During programming, turn the PWR control all the way Counter-Clockwise to minimize RF fields and prevent overwhelming your computer. ( You should connect the output to a dummy load or antenna any time you carry out any programming, operation, or testing !) With the power turned down, you may power the transmitter with a nine volt battery or other low current power supply. You must apply power to the unit to program the TT3 chip. Do not program the transmitter to send position reports more than once per minute, as it could cause the device to overheat.

Transio TCC-80I User’s Manual

The TCC-80I is the world’s first high-speed, isolated, self-powered converter. It is powered via the host’s RS-232 port and provides complete signal conversion between RS-232 and RS-422/485 devices. The TCC-80I coverts back and forth between RS-232’s TxD and RxD lines to either half duplex 2-wire RS-485 or the balanced signal of full duplex 4-wire RS-422/485. In addition, the TCC-80I’s built-in 15 KV ESD surge protector provides the output ports with comprehensive protection against surges and spikes. Perhaps the most important feature is the 2.5 KV isolation designed to prevent ground loop currents, reduce damage caused by data loss, and prevent damage to the communication interfaces.

The TCC-80I is also designed to provide RS-485 auto data direction control, in which the RS-485 driver is enabled automatically when the circuitry senses the TxD output from the RS-232 signal. Programming effort is not required to control the transmission direction of the half duplex RS-485 signal.

What Is GPS
In 1974 the USA Department of Defense set about developing a Global Positioning System (GPS), a constellation of 24 satellites that Orbits 12,000 miles above the Earth. Using triangulation of signals from four of the satellites, a receiving unit on earth can pinpoint its current location to within a few meters. A GPS device receives the data, converts the longitude, latitude, and altitude (LLA) data into a location point. Position and navigation information is vital to a wide range of professional and recreational activities covering surveying, search and rescue, tracking, hiking, navigating, and so forth.

BAT104-7AA-NiCd PC/104 Battery Backup Module Manual

BAT104-7AA-NiCd PC/104 Battery Backup Module Manual

The BAT104 works with the HE104 and V104 Vehicle Power Supplies to create a complete UPS system. For loads less than 30 watts, the BAT104-7AA-NiCd can supply backup power for up to five minutes.
Connect the BAT104 to the HE104 and V104 as follows:
- BAT104 CN3 “Common” to HE104/V104 CN3 terminal 1
- BAT104 CN3 “Battery Out” to HE104/V104 CN3 terminal 2 (and to terminal 3 for voltage monitoring)
- BAT104 CN3 “Battery In”, for external batteries
The BAT104 has a thermal fuse (F2), a current fuse (F1) for protection against overcharging, and shorts on the battery output.

A LM35 temperature sensor (Q3) provides temperature feedback for charge termination, which can be read by the Power Management unit PM104 installed on the HE104 or V104. The LM35 has an output signal of 10mV/degC. For example, at 25 degC the LM35 will output 250mV. The LM35 signal is normally connected to connector CN3 terminal 4 of the HE104 or V104.

Jumper J3 changes the supply source for the LM35 temperature sensor. When the jumper is installed between pins J3-1 and J3-2, the power source is from CN1 main input supply. When the jumper is installed between J3-2 and J3-3, the power source for the LM35 is the +5V from the PC/104 bus. Note: The Main Input source is required only if the LM35 is to be powered by it.

The BAT104 has a Mosfet transistor for isolating the batteries from the HE104 or V104 during extended power outages. The Mosfet transistor isolates the BAT104 whenever the +5V is not on the PC/104 bus and connects the BAT104 batteries whenever +5V is on the PC/104 bus. Therefore, to disconnect the BAT104 from the HE104 or V104, the PM104 just has to turn off the +5V output.

HS-16-CNR Manual

HS-16-CNR Manual

This manual should be used with the Neuralynx Electrode Interface Board 16 channel (EIB-16) manual. The Neuralynx Headstage 16 (HS-16-CNR) Amplifier is the active electronic part of the Electrode Interface Board / Headstage / Tether system. It provides 16 channels of Unity Gain amplification (buffering). It also provides connections for the electrode inputs to the EIB-16 and an output connector for a 20-conductor tether.

The Headstage Amplifier size is approximately 20 mm high by 10 mm wide. Weighing only 600mg, the HS-16-CNR is a good choice for small animals. One connector on the bottom of the board is used to connect the Headstage Amplifier to the Neuralynx Electrode Interface Board. Low noise, low power, low input bias current Op amps have been used on this device instead of the traditional “Source Follower FET circuit” used in the traditional headstage amplifier design in order to:
• obtain exact unity gain which greatly improves Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR)
• performance for the entire recording system for artifact and other common mode noise signal rejection;
• lower output impedance to reduce noise susceptibility of the tether and other signal cabling;
• provide integral antistatic protection on each input channel;
• insure low input bias current levels; and
• eliminate signal distortion.

Because an Op amp is used for the unity gain buffer amplifiers, special care and attention must be given to the power supply design and power application and removal sequencing. The input protection circuitry will lower the input impedance if the input voltage exceeds power supply voltage. This can occur if the input voltage exceeds the power supply voltage or by the loss of power supply voltage. The Neuralynx EEG/Reference Panel contains power supplies which properly sequence power supply voltage and monitor headstage currents.

LPS 505N Programmable DC Power Supply User’s Manual

LPS 505N Programmable DC Power Supply User’s Manual

Motech LPS 505N is a programmable DC power supply with three (3) outputs that channel 1 and channel 2 are linear power supply and channel 3 is a switching mode power supply. LPS 505N comes with 12 bits resolution. The maximum total output power is 222 watts with both channel 1 and channel 2 providing 96 watts each (0 32V/3A) and channel 3 providing 30 watts (0 15V/5A). For the channel 3, the maximum output power is 30 watts. When the output voltage is set to 6 volts or less, the output current can be up to 5A. If the output voltage is set above 6 volts then the maximum output current depends on the output voltage setting and the maximum output power of 30 watts.

This is a unique feature and it differs from other traditional power supplies. For the channel 1 and channel 2, they can be put in parallel mode if the output current is required to drive more than 3A. Also, they can be put in serial mode if the output voltage is required to provide more than 32V. Tracking function is a convenient feature that is also provided to meet general applications. The LPS 505N has a rotary and numeric keypads for user to manipulate this electronic instrument easily. The LPS 505N provides a memory space enough to store 100 configurations that can be recalled later after saving.

This feature offers an easy way to restore the application setting. There is a build-in timer (1 sec100 hrs) that can be used to control when to switch off the output power. This feature provides an extra safety for burning room and electroplating applications. The LPS 505N also provides over voltage protection (OVP) and over current protection (OCP) features used to keep the output voltage and current within the safety level preventing the target from the damage caused by the over current. The key lock feature is added to avoid accidentally wrong setting to the LPS 505N. When the input power and the load change, the LPS 505N provides a stable output with the load and line regulation within 0.01% and the transient time less than 50 us. When in remote mode, the LPS 505N may output a new setting in 50 ms after receive a command. This quick response time may increase the throughput on the mass production lines.

Using CMOS Circuitry in Industrial Control

Using CMOS Circuitry in Industrial Control

Industrial computers originally used LSTTL circuits. Because many PC components are used in laptop computers, IC manufacturers are exclusively using CMOS technology. Both TTL and CMOS have failure mechanisms, but they are different. This section describes some of the common failures which are common to all manufacturers of CMOS equipment. However, much of the information has been put in the context of the Micro PC.

Octagon has developed a reliable database of customer-induced, field failures. The average MTBF of Micro PC cards exceeds 11 years, yet there are failures. Most failures have been identified as customer-induced, but there is a small percentage that cannot be identified. As expected, virtually all the failures occur when bringing up the first system. On subsequent systems, the failure rate drops dramatically.

- Approximately 20% of the returned cards are problem-free. These cards, typically, have the wrong jumper settings or the customer has problems with the software. This causes frustration for the customer and incurs a testing charge from Octagon.
- Of the remaining 80% of the cards, 90% of these cards fail due to customer misuse and accident. Customers often cannot pinpoint the cause of the misuse.
- Therefore, 72% of the returned cards are damaged through some type of misuse. Of the remaining 8%, Octagon is unable to determine the cause of the failure and repairs these cards at no charge if they are under warranty.
