Aibo Quickstart Manual

Aibo Quickstart Manual

Development with Aibo is possible using the OPEN-R SDE. The OPEN-R SDE is a set of tools released by Sony for the development of programs for Aibo. It is composed by the OPEN-R SDK, the R-Code SDK, the Aibo Remote Framework and the Aibo Motion Editor. This document describes how to set up a research environment with an Aibo robot for the use of those tools, but it does not includes instructions about how to use the tools or how to program the robot. For those other purposes you can consult the official documentation or the other documents released by the same author of this document.

Aibo can be programmed by using the scripting language R-Code or the C++ environment provided by OPEN-R, but when using Aibo for complex control only the second option is used. Because of that, this document will focus on the creation of a development environment for the OPEN-R. OPEN-R is composed of libraries and sample programs that allow a complete control over the Aibo hardware using a C++ environment. Even that this development kit is mainly targeted to a Linux platform, it is also possible to use it on Windows platforms by installing the Cygwin application. The usual procedure to work with Aibo is the following: a program is created on the computer using OPEN-R and C++. This program is then cross-compiled to target the Aibo platform. Then the resulting binaries are transferred from the PC to a memory stick. The memory stick is then inserted onto Aibo.

To set up all the required environment, it will be necessary to install first the OPEN-R SDK on the PC. Then a installation on the PC of a memory stick reader/writer will also be necessary in order to transfer programs from the computer to the memory stick. Once the PC is able to use the memory stick reader/writer, it will be necessary to prepare a memory stick with the OPEN-R base system. The last step will be to configure the wireless network for communication between the PC and Aibo.

The Insider’s Guide to Windows Vista

The Insider’s Guide to Windows Vista

Windows Vista is here at last. One of the largest software projects ever undertaken, Vista is indisputably a milestone—despite Microsoft’s having abandoned many of its most ambitious goals for the OS—and not just for Microsoft but for the entire PC industry. Of course, Vista is not without its skeptics. PC makers say it will require more processing power, graphics capabilities, and memory than is typical of today’s mainstream machines. Software vendors complain that Vista’s vaunted security features are, in fact, locking them out. Users may wonder if it offers enough that’s truly new to be worth the bother—particularly given that a number of Vista features and bundled applications are also available for Windows XP. We’ve performed extensive, hands-on analysis of Vista and sorted out the claims to help you decide whether, or more realistically when, to make the move—and to show you what you can expect when you do.

The Vista Promise
Microsoft calls Vista “a breakthrough computing experience.” That’s marketing hyperbole, for sure, but it’s not entirely unfounded. The new OS is far more than Windows XP with a pretty new face. Many aspects of Vista are substantive improvements: stronger security, better built-in apps, networking enhancements, parental controls, and DirectX 10 graphics support, to name just a few.

As a whole, Vista feels more evolutionary than revolutionary. That’s not all bad; one of Microsoft’s strengths has been its commitment to backward compatibility, which continues with Vista. Vista’s real competitor, though, is Windows XP. For many users, XP is good enough. And for all the advances in Vista, it’s hard to avoid seeing the things that aren’t as good as they could have been.

Guide to Widescreen Notebook Displays

Guide to Widescreen Notebook Displays

The earliest instance of the widescreen display being installed inside a notebook computer can be traced back to the Sony C1 which displayed a resolution of just 800 x 480. Widescreens made their official entrance in PC notebooks in 2003, although Apple preceded this by offering the 15” widescreen Power Mac. In 2005, the popularity of widescreen notebooks reached a new high with the unveiling of the Thinkpad widescreen Z60 series notebooks.

The question is: Is the widescreen format for everybody? A big part of the answer will depend on what a widescreen notebook or monitor is used to do. Here are some considerations that might help with your decision:

1. Widescreen Notebooks
The length and width of a widescreen notebook’s screen set it apart from the standard notebook. The average notebook uses an aspect ratio of 4:3 and a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. The widescreen notebook breaks with tradition and increases screen size 25% lengthwise for proportions equal to that of the cinema screen or a widescreen LCD TV.

2. Widescreen Display Sizes
The Sony C1 may have started it all, but it is by now considered only as a small-sized widescreen notebook, which is anything below 12.1”. Currently on offer are 8.9”, 10.6”, 11.1”, 12.1”, 13.3”, 14”, 15.4”, and 17” display sizes, with 19” products reportedly in the pipeline.

DSTARInterface User’s Guide

DSTARInterface User’s Guide

DSTARInterface is designed to run on any OS with any recent Java Virtual Machine. The interface requires the operating system and JVM to open the port in full duplex mode using a Java/serial-port interface. DSTARInterface is comprised of a number of classes which Java looks at as objects. The main class is DSTARInterface. This class is called at startup, sets parameters, and begins execution of the different support threads.

DSTARInterface works in conjunction with the javAPRSIGate TNCInterface to provide full, bidirectional communication with the serial port. All IGate logic is handled at in javAPRSIGate which leaves the DSTARInterface to concentrate on formatting and sending packets to the TNC log ports. DSTARInterface gates to and from the radio using standard TNC2 format strings. This allows remote APRS clients to operate as if they were connected to a TNC. All APRS packets have a CRC sequence added to the beginning of the line to reduce packet corruption. The same algorithm/technique used in computing the D-STAR RF header FCS is used for the TNC2 lines. The CRC string is stripped from line before gating to APRS-IS. The line is of the format $$CRCxxxx,AE5PL>APRS:rest of packet

DSTARInterface also converts the ICOM GPS-mode transmissions into an APRS posit. The first four letters of the GPS “message” are interpreted as a symbol per Appendix 2 of the APRS specification. A checksum (xor’ed from zero) prefixed by an asterisk is required in the GPS message. To simplify setting the GPS message, use the D-PRS Calculator at http://www.aprs-is.net/dprscalc.htm You must have JavaScript enabled in your browser to use that page

IBM USB 2.0 CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive User’s Guide

Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer. Never wrap a power cord around the power adapter or other object. Doing so can stress the cord in ways that can cause the cord to fray, crack or crimp. This can present a safety hazard. Always route power cords so that they will not be walked on, tripped over, or pinched by objects.

Protect the cord and power adapters from liquids. For instance, do not leave your cord or power adapter near sinks, tubs, toilets, or on floors that are cleaned with liquid cleansers. Liquids can cause a short circuit, particularly if the cord or power adapter has been stressed by misuse. Liquids can also cause gradual corrosion of the power cord terminals and/or the connector terminals on the adapter which can eventually result in overheating.

Always connect power cords and signal cables in the correct order and ensure that all power cord connectors are securely and completely plugged into receptacles. Do not use any power adapter that shows corrosion at the ac input pins and/or shows signs of overheating (such as deformed plastic) at the ac input or anywhere on the power adapter.

AT&T Remote Access Service for Wireless User Guide

AT&T Remote Access Service for Wireless User Guide

The implementation of GPRS I by wireless operators in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa. See appendix I for countries in EMEA region) and AP (Asian Pacific) offers capabilities to enhance the AT&T Remote Access Services portfolio with new functions, features and price points. AT&T Remote Access Services for Wireless comprises four new offerings:
• AT&T Remote Access Services, Wireless–SecureIP
• AT&T Remote Access Services, Wireless–DualAccess
• AT&T Remote Access Services, Wireless–Business Internet
• AT&T Remote Access Services, Wireless–AVTS

AT&T Remote Access Services for Wireless will allow AT&T customers to access their corporate networks and Internet based resources, using familiar AT&T Remote Access features and functions, from designated public packet switched networks (GPRS and 3G I in Europe, Air- H” network in Japan), benefiting from direct managed interconnection between these ‘mobile’ services and the AT&T Global Network Remote Access infrastructure. The AT&T solution will employ direct interconnections to wireless networks wherever possible, using a shared, dedicated AT&T APN I , so that customers can access the AT&T secure IP network and reach their corporate LAN applications without needing to traverse the Internet. Alternatively, customers can choose the AT&T Internet backbone to either directly tunnel to their VPN site gateways using AT&T’s managed IPsec based VPN service, or indeed to access any other sites or nodes on the rest of the Internet, for a more-managed Internet service.

EYTraker User’s Manual PCB Version 3.00

EYTraker User’s Manual PCB Version 3.00

The EYTraker unit was designed as part of a new generation of APRS tracking devices that will add to the growing number of units that currently support live and realtime APRS tracking. The unit is different from the current tracking units available from various sources, based on the fact that the tracking unit does not use conventional HAM frequency RF technology, but rather utilises the GSM band, in particular the GPRS functionality, of the GSM system to relay APRS packets.

The EYTraker unit incorporates a complete realtime APRS tracking solution by providing the user with an onboard GPS device, a Quad band OEM GSM module with SIM card holder and an integrated micro-controlled management system to control the OEM modules.

The EYTraker unit connects directly to an APRS server anywhere in the world and will relay APRS compatible packages to the APRS server to be distributed across the worldwide APRS network. The unit also includes various additional payloads, with the APRS standard packet, to add value to the APRS standard packet.

VAIO Notebooks Winter 2007

VAIO Notebooks Winter 2007

Sony introduced VAIO in September 1996 and with it created a whole new lifestyle.
The VAIO name itself perfectly reflects the flair and imagination which Sony has bought to the computer world. Initially meaning “Video Audio Input Output”, as Sony’s products have evolved into a family of digital devices that function together, it has also come to mean “Video Audio Integrated Operation”. Even the design of the VAIO logo has a deep symbolism: the continuous wavy line which makes up the ‘V’ and ‘A’ looks like an analogue sine wave, while the ‘I’ and ‘O’ resemble the numbers one and zero on which computer binary language is based.

Today, VAIO continues to evolve and reflect Sony’s unique style, creating new possibilities in both business and entertainment and firmly establishing itself as the PC for our changing lifestyles.

Examining the Asus Eee PC

Examining the Asus Eee PC

In June 2007, Asus Corporation announced a new generation of tiny, inexpensive laptop computers that would bring Linux to a new generation of end users. With a miniature 7-inch display, the Eee PC is hardly bigger than a PDA, and yet this dainty device functions as a true personal computer, with a full keyboard and modem, wireless, and standard Ethernet connectivity. According to the documentation, the three consecutive “e”s in the curious name represent the vendor’s commitment to provide a system that is:
• Easy to learn, work, and play
• Excellent Internet experience
• Excellent mobile computing experience

The mission of the Eee PC is to provide a system that meets these goals and still sells for the very reasonable price of US$ 400 (300 Euros). I toured a pre-release version of the Eee PC 701 4G to see if this natty notebook has truly earned its “e”s. The Eee PC box promises a choice of six colors, but only black and white were available for the initial release. (Mine was black.)

Asus P735 Review

Asus P735 Review

After conquering the IT market with its optical drives, motherboards and graphical cards, Asus brand becomes more and more reckoned for its Pocket PCs. Since the P525 model was launched on the market, Asus improved its devices to the point that it has no rival in terms of performance. Actually, the latest models available from Asus (P535, P735) are “killing” any other device manufactured by HTC, Eten or Gigabyte. There’s no doubt about it: HTC is still the king of Pocket PCs in terms of features, but if you’re looking for speed and reliability, then Asus is the brand that you want. Asus P735 seems to be in fact an upgraded version of P535, which simply received 3G technology, but curiously has been stripped of the GPS receiver that you can find in the latter model.

Design
Asus P735 doesn’t shine through its design and won’t stand out from the crowd, no matter how much you’ll expose it to the world. Still, the candybar look of the device will attract those that are not close-mouthed to new brands that were just launched on the market. The Pocket PC amazes through its simplicity and excellent finishes. The material used in manufacturing it is highly polished and it seems not to get scratched so easily, protecting the device even if not kept in a leather case.

You might think that the device should be slimmer than it is (19 mm), just because it lacks QWERTY keyboard, but in fact, its thickness makes it more balanced, thus it fits better in your hand or pocket. As a matter of fact, Asus P735 looks better in reality than in pictures, and it’s even better the moment you take it in your hand. Its measures (109 x 59 x 19 mm) and weight (143 grams including battery) will certainly satisfy any handheld fan. The device features the usual external controls and keys that every user expects.

3DP-Vert SideWinder 3D Pro/USB Converter User Guide

3DP-Vert SideWinder 3D Pro/USB Converter User Guide

Though there is no necessary order for connecting the PV to your PC, it is recommended to proceed as follows: Connect the Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro to the PV’s DSUB-15 connector. Connect the B end of a USB A-B cable to the PV’s USB connector.
If you have not mounted your PV, place the PV in a spot on your desk where the other end of the USB cable will reach a USB port of your PC. Make sure there is no metal under the converter or even close to it! Ensure the 3D Pro is in the neutral position (don’t touch it.) Connect the A end of the USB A-B cable to a USB port on your PC.

For operation you will need 1) the PV, 2) a 3D Pro joystick and 3) a USB A-B Cable. When handling the unprotected PV, use caution to prevent electrostatic damage. If operated without protection, the PV should NOT EVER come in direct contact with metal while connected to a PC to prevent damage to the PV and/or your PC. Guard against liquids spilling on the PV. Keep your pets and your paws away from the PV, and don’t even look at it when it’s powered up.

For proper installation, you have two mounting options:
The Port Mount – installation inside the PC
If simplicity is your goal, this is the installation method that is right for you. Using a slot bracket for a game port you will install the PV inside your PC.

The Box Mount – installation as an external device
If you are not set up with a PC that offers a free slot, have a laptop, or want to use the converter on multiple PCs, the PV can be mounted in an inexpensive box which helps protect the converter.

SmartLSM Manual

SmartLSM is an application developed specially for operating a SmartCD type Programming Unit in conjunction with a Windows Mobile 5.x PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). This enables you – very easily and without cables – to program and retrieve data from all of the digital locking components in the SimonsVoss System 3060. How you use SmartLSM will vary depending on the software you are using: LSM (Locking System Management) or LDB (Locking DataBase); when there are differences, special mention will be made in the text. Please read the latest manuals of the software products you are using.

Programming locks
The Lock Plan is created using the Lock Plan software LDB version 1.5x or LSM version 2.2 (or higher). Subsequent changes to authorisations are performed in the Lock Plan software, then transferred to the Pocket PC.
