GEM-2 Manual

The GEM-2 consists of a sensor housing (the “ski”), the electronics console, and WinGEM software. The standard accessories include a battery charger, carrying straps, a download cable, a brief field guide, and this manual. The WinGEM software runs on Windows-based PCs. When the GEM-2 is attached to a PC, WinGEM can control its operation. WinGEM is used to initially configure the sensor and to specify the frequencies to be used for a particular survey. WinGEM plots the acquired data to verify proper operation.

A common use of the GEM-2 involves walking with the unit along a predefined survey grid. After a survey is completed, the WinGEM software is used to download the data from the GEM-2 and store it in a file on the PC for analysis. Given the positions of the ends of the grid lines, WinGEM assigns an x-y position to each data point using “dead reckoning” or interpolation and creates a separate file containing positioned survey data.

A more flexible survey technique involves connecting a GPS unit to the GEM-2 console during data acquisition. The time and positioning data from the GPS is stored along with the GEM-2’s EM data. WinGEM uses the GPS data to assign an x-y position to each EM data point during the “export” function. The text file containing positioned survey data can be read by most spreadsheets and analysis programs.
