Linux on Sony VAIO mini−HOWTO

Linux on Sony VAIO mini−HOWTO

In this HOWTO, I will go over how to use Linux under Sony VAIO computers. The VAIO computers are great, but was not very friendly to Linux. But this isn’t mean that you cannot use it, actually you can! Throughout this document, I will assume that you own either PCV 70 or 90. Since almost all VAIO models are similar in their architecture (although newer ones have larger disks, updated video card, more RAM, etc), many of contents in this document should apply to all VAIO models.

Most of hardwares installed in the system are compatible under Linux. However there are exceptions of modem, USB Port and MPEG decoder. Please be aware that you cannot use modem, which should be problem for some of you. Modems installed in the VAIO is called DSVD modem, which is the variant of the “Winmodem.”

Linux on the Sony Vaio GR Series Laptops

Linux on the Sony Vaio GR Series Laptops

Outlined in this document are the steps needed to make your Sony laptop (either the Sony Vaio GR370 and GR390) function properly under Linux. This document was written with no particular Linux distribution in mind, and should work under all types. It is recommended that you custom build the kernel. If you do not want to, you may not have to, though it is recommended to get the most out of Linux on your laptop.

Installing Linux
Install Linux as you normally would. The hard drive shipped with the laptops come partitioned into two partitions: one with Windows XP loaded, and the second was empty. Delete the second partition using any regular partitioning tool that you can during your Linux installation, and re-create the partition. After you have installed Linux, you may notice that some hardware interfaces do not get detected, or if they do, they do not work as they should. The following sections will help you correct these.

Sony VAIO VGX-XL201 Media Center PC Clean Install Guide

Sony VAIO VGX-XL201 Media Center PC Clean Install Guide

When I purchased my VGX-XL201 Media Center PC, I fully expected it to arrive preloaded with a myriad of freeware, trialware and Sony-branded software products and I wasn’t wrong. Such is the trend when you buy almost any PC these days, and I don’t doubt that many consumers are very grateful for it. I am not one of those consumers. I know what software I want for any particular job, and invariably it isn’t the software provided by Sony. Also, due to the pace of software development, by the time you receive your PC, most of the freeware software will be out of date, and Sony, like most PC manufacturers these days have a tendency to give you old versions of retail applications like Adobe Photoshop Elements or WinDVD.

In their efforts to make life easier for novice PC users, Sony inadvertently make the process of escaping from the factory installed image difficult, even for competent PC users. They create a hidden partition on the hard disk that contains the factory installed image and provide software to back up that partition to a pair of recordable DVDs. This makes it possible to dispense with the hidden partition and recover the disk space, and also provides the means by which you can extract the essential drivers and utilities that make a clean install possible. What Sony don’t do is give you an OEM operating system CD or any means to install an operating system other than by re-imaging the PC back to it’s factory default settings.

This guide is intended for anyone who, like me, wishes to install the operating system of their choice without the software baggage that comes with the factory installed image. It goes into enough detail that a novice user should be able to follow it, but it is really intended for intermediate to advanced PC users. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could get yourself into a terrible mess by following this guide and of course it goes without saying that I accept absolutely no responsibility for any damage or inconvenience whatsoever resulting from the use of this guide. It is provided in the hope that it will be useful, but it’s use is entirely at your own risk. The guide will deal specifically with installing the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating system on a Sony VAIO VGX-XL201 Media Center PC. However, the concepts described in this guide are likely to be largely relevant to similar operating systems like Windows XP Professional, and media center PCs like the Sony VAIO VGX-XL202. When Windows Vista ships in January 2007 I will probably create a new version of this guide dealing specifically with that operating system for the VGX-XL201.

VAIO Notebooks Winter 2007

VAIO Notebooks Winter 2007

Sony introduced VAIO in September 1996 and with it created a whole new lifestyle.
The VAIO name itself perfectly reflects the flair and imagination which Sony has bought to the computer world. Initially meaning “Video Audio Input Output”, as Sony’s products have evolved into a family of digital devices that function together, it has also come to mean “Video Audio Integrated Operation”. Even the design of the VAIO logo has a deep symbolism: the continuous wavy line which makes up the ‘V’ and ‘A’ looks like an analogue sine wave, while the ‘I’ and ‘O’ resemble the numbers one and zero on which computer binary language is based.

Today, VAIO continues to evolve and reflect Sony’s unique style, creating new possibilities in both business and entertainment and firmly establishing itself as the PC for our changing lifestyles.

Viewers Guide for TiVo Series1 DVRs (Philips or Sony)

Viewers Guide for TiVo Series1 DVRs (Philips or Sony)

It’s a revolution in television. We’ve pioneered an exciting new category that will forever change the way you watch TV. With a new TiVo Digital Video Recorder (DVR) in your living room, you’ll quickly see how easy it is to watch what you want, when you want.
Never miss your favorite show again.
TiVo automatically records every episode of your favorite series, all season long, even if the network schedule changes. It can even skip reruns.
No more interruptions.
Pause live TV for as long as 30 minutes—any channel, any time. You can also rewind, instant replay, and slow-motion live or recorded TV. Wow!
No videotapes required.
Because it’s all-digital, TiVo saves all your programs in one place so they’re ready-to- watch anytime. You can even start watching a show from the beginning while it’s still recording.
Watch more of what you like, less of what you don’t.
Because the TiVo service is “smart,” it automatically finds and records shows that feature your favorite actor, team, hobby, etc., so you’ll always catch the good stuff—even if you never knew it was on.
At last, TV fits into your busy life, not the other way around.

Sony XDCAM Users Guide

Sony XDCAM Users Guide

Sony’s XDCAM™ decks and camcorders use an optical disc with a capacity of up to 23.3 GB to store recorded media. The XDCAM devices can record media in high-resolutionMPEG IMX™, DVCAM™, and XDCAM HD formats. At the same time, XDCAM devices create corresponding low-resolution proxy media (MPEG-4). This allows you to work with the proxy media in an off-line editing session and then later conform the proxy media to the corresponding high-resolution media.

Working with XDCAM media entails the following general steps:
1. Connecting the XDCAM device to your system and configuring your settings.
2. Importing the proxy media.
3. Editing the proxy media.
4. Using the Import function or the Batch Import function to import DVCAM or MPEG IMX media, and then conforming the proxy media with the high-resolution media.
5. Editing and finishing the sequence

This manual provides detailed information for the setup and use of your system. Please read this manual before using your TrackSnap camera. The information provided will give you good service from your system. At the heart of any motion sensing camera is a controller board. All TrackSnap cameras use a PixController PIR (Pryoelectric Infra-Red) motion detection sensor. The PixController motion sensor electronics is a unique design. With this design you will get the minimum number of false triggers (blank photos), and the PIR electronics will shut down when the board battery gets low also minimising false photos.

It can detect the target in any vector of travel (say up and down target movement), which is very important if you plan to mount your sensor in an elevated position. Knowing your system is working in the field all the time is what you expect from our high quality products!
