Monitoring and Data Acquisition Storage System MADASS Operation Manual
The MADASS, short for Monitoring And Data Acquisition Storage System, is a vehicular data recording device designed to record relevant vehicle operating conditions prior to, and after the occurrence of an incident where vehicle stability has been compromised causing a potential roll-over. The system monitors lateral and axial acceleration continuously until an incident occurs where acceleration in either direction exceeds user defined g force levels. Once an incident occurs the MADASS logs the data for 150 seconds prior to the incident, as well as 15 seconds after. A battery backup system ensures the MADASS will continue to record even if vehicle power is not available after the incident has occurred.
The system consists of 3 units and several sensors:
- The LG-Alert TM unit which provides lateral, axial, and vertical acceleration signals to the MADASS Main recorder unit.
- The MADASS Main recorder unit which records the 3 signals from the LG-Alert TM , as well as pertinent vehicle operating data such as Engine RPM & Throttle position, Steering wheel position, Brake application & pedal position, and Vehicle location, course & speed from a GPS receiver.
- A Remote Display unit reports system diagnostic information, and the number of incidents stored in the MADASS main unit. The display panel also provides a communication port for a PC to download & analyze incident data
The system records data continuously while the vehicle ignition key is turned on. Once an incident occurs all data is logged into memory. Recording is stopped until power to the unit is removed & re-applied. A total of 5 incident records are stored in the MADASS unit for retrieval & analysis. If the total number of incidents is greater than 5 the next incident overwrites the data of the previous incident in the order of 1 to 5. Any one of the 5 stored incident data files can be downloaded to a PC running MS-Windows 98/ME/2000/XP for graphical analysis using the supplied Madass Toolbox software.
